The Role of the Biopsy Marker (Clip)
After the tissue samples are removed, a tiny metallic marker (often called a "clip") is placed at the biopsy site.
Purpose: The clip, roughly the size of a sesame seed, marks the exact location of the biopsy. This is crucial if the biopsy shows cancer and the patient needs follow-up surgery.
Permanence: The clip is made of titanium or stainless steel and is safe to stay in the body permanently. It does not set off airport metal detectors and is MRI-compatible.
Verification: A quick mammogram is usually performed immediately after the biopsy to confirm the clip's position.
